London police are reminding drivers to slow down after stopping a 17-year-old driver for allegedly going more than twice the speed limit on a city street.
An officer clocked a vehicle travelling at 151 kilometres per hour in a posted 70 km/h on Wellington Road south of Westminster Drive just before noon on Wednesday.
The driver, a 17-year-old, had only a G2 class licence, police said
The teen has been charged with stunt driving and had their vehicle impounded for 14 days and licence suspended for 30 days. The individual also faces a minimum fine of $2,000, police said.
Penalties for stunt driving were increased by the Ontario government last year. Those stopped for driving more than 40 km/h above the speed limit on roads with a limit of 80 km/h or lower or doing 50 km/h or more over the limit on all other roads are now hit with an automatic 30 day licence suspension and 14 day vehicle impoundment. That is up from a seven day licence suspension and one week vehicle impoundment.
