Huron Perth’s Medical Officer of Health says she’d like to see the pressure on the province’s hospitals relieved before a full reopening.
Dr. Miriam Klassen, says hospitals in the province are still under significant strain from cases due to the Omicron variant
“Right now, the hospitals are still under significant pressure. Hospitalizations and ICU admissions are at a high rate and things like routine surgeries have been put on hold. I would like to see that pressure relieved,”
Dr. Klassen says we have to keep monitoring the situation.
“I think we’re all hoping that Omicron, which grows so quickly, will also peak soon and start coming down, and then we’ll be able to ease restrictions. I think as we ease restrictions, we’ll have to keep monitoring those indicators.”
She adds the province hasn’t reached out for her feedback regarding the announcement to come.
“I would like to see hospitals get back to full functioning, and also that schools can stay open. So we need to control community transmission so that we don’t see cases impact capacity of schools.”
While Huron Perth public health officials reported 1,294 active COVID-19 cases in the region on Wednesday, Klassen reiterated the health unit is no longer able to track every new COVID case across the county since the Omicron variant continues to spread rapidly.
