Spiny water flea, Bithotrephes longimanus, are native to brackish Northern European and Asian waterbodies and were inadvertently introduced into the Great Lakes via shipping ballast. Due to their unusually large size for zooplankton, they disrupt the natural food chain and preventing them from invading new areas in the Great Lakes is key.
