Huron East hunter fined for unsafe practices

A Huron East hunter has received over $3,000 in fines and had their licence suspended for three years, for what the Ministry of Natural Resources says were unsafe and illegal practices.

Constantine Boyd was convicted of discharging a firearm across a public right of way, careless hunting, having a loaded firearm in a vehicle and failing to invalidate his deer tag.

A Guelph court recently heard that in December 2020, a conservation officer patrolling the area encountered Boyd with a loaded firearm in the front seat of his pickup truck and a deer in the truck bed with an un-notched deer tag. With assistance of a Ministry canine unit, the investigators found that Boyd fired shots at the deer across Moncrieff Road. They also determined that he discharged his firearm in an unsafe direction, with barns and farm lanes a short distance away.

Boyd had previously had his licence suspended in 2019 for trespassing for the purpose of hunting and unlawfully discharging a firearm.
