London airport opens free beach volleyball court

The London International Airport is quickly establishing itself as a hotspot for free outdoor fun that surprisingly doesn’t involve planes.

The airport has opened a new beach volleyball court on its property, just one week after its community pickleball court returned.

“Our operations team had a great idea to turn the hockey rink area into a beach facility in order to enjoy year-round recreational activities at the airport,” Airport President and CEO Scott McFadzean, said in a statement. “Building a community at the airport is very important to our culture and something we are very proud of here at London International Airport.”

The airport first began getting into the free recreation business last summer with the opening of a pickleball court. In the winter, it built an ice rink for the community. Both spots proved popular with an overwhelming response from the public, according to airport officials. The goal of the recreation spaces is to give back to Londoners by providing a safe spot for sport.

The new beach volleyball court is located north of the airport on Hurricane Road. It offers free parking along the fence in front of the Airside Operations Center. Those looking to play only need to bring a ball.

The court will be open daily from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The airport’s pickleball court reopened for its second season earlier this month. It is located on the northeast side of the parking lot and is free to use between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.
