Teen charged after London cop assaulted busting up disturbance

A 15-year-old girl is facing charges after a police officer was assaulted while breaking up a large disturbance in northeast London over the weekend.

London police were called about the disturbance on Thurman Circle, south of Cheapside Street just after midnight on Sunday. When officers arrived, they found a number of people in the street and attempted to disperse the crowd.

While doing so, police spotted two women in a physical fight and attempted to arrest one. It was at this time some people in the crowd, including a teenage girl, tried to intervene in the arrest, police said.

An officer was allegedly assaulted by a young woman who then tried to run from the area. She was arrested without incident.

A 15-year-old girl, who cannot be named because of her age, has since been charged with assaulting a peace officer. She is expected to appear in London court in relation to the charge on June 26.

The officer suffered minor injuries, but did not require medical treatment, police said.
