Walkerton’s Market Garden Park expected to open in July

Construction begins next week to convert an empty downtown lot in Walkerton to an outdoor community hub.

Market Garden Park is expected to open in July at 312 Durham Street, between Walker’s Landing and EXP Realty. The park was originally set to open last year, but construction was delayed due to labour and supply shortages, and a higher-than-expected cost estimate.

“We are very excited to see the next stage of this project taking shape, and are looking forward to holding a grand opening this summer,” said Brockton Mayor Chris Peabody. “It will be a chance to thank our many donors and contributors, including the Wong family, who made the land purchase possible, and to thank our businesses and residents for being patient as the project has unfolded.”

The total project is budgeted at $450,000 and close to $200,000 has been raised through donations from the community, and provincial and federal grants.

“Brockton staff and Council are committed to ensuring that the Market Garden park opens this summer,” said Sonya Watson, Chief Administrative Officer. “Monies have been allocated from the reserve fund and long-term debt to support its completion, however additional contributions from the community and businesses are most welcome to help offset the costs and develop this local community asset. The Market Garden will draw community members and visitors to our beautiful downtown Walkerton.”

The park will include a water feature, seating, a small stage, and plaques celebrating contributors to the project. Those who donate before the end of May will be acknowledged on a donor plaque.

If you’re a business, group or individual wishing to contribute, email ppeirol@brockton.ca or visit the municipality’s website for more information.
