A new Junior Firefighter program will begin in Owen Sound in May of this year. Owen Sound Fire and Emergency Services is offering a free youth training program to students in Grades 5 or 6 at Owen Sound Schools.
Fire Prevention Officers Greg Nicol said fire safety starts with children, and they’re looking forward to showing students how to become a firefighter, prevent fires, and prevent injuries.
The free program will run for six consecutive Tuesday evenings beginning May 2 through June 6, 2023, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Owen Sound Fire and Emergency Services Headquarters Station located at 1209 3rd Avenue East.
Spaces are limited and students should register early, using packages they get at school, or by contacting the Owen Sound Fire Department.
“We are thrilled to start this Junior Firefighter program in Owen Sound, which is a very beneficial and exciting opportunity for local youth. Keeping the program free and accessible to all students in grades 5 and 6, we hope it will encourage residents to get their child registered quickly,” said Fire Chief Phil Eagleson.
