North Huron council has affirmed its support for a Wingham Homecoming event in 2024.
Council held a special meeting on February 17, where it passed a resolution to dissolve a previous council committee following the resignation of multiple committee members, including a member that operated a Facebook account that said planning for the event would no longer take place.
Reeve Paul Heffer said the issue was to be discussed at North Huron’s next regular meeting on February 21, but instead a special meeting was called on February 17 that immediately entered into closed session, where Wingham Homecoming was discussed. The exact details of this meeting are not available.
Following the meeting, North Huron issued a statement with quotes from Reeve Heffer, where he says that “council determined that the community would be better served by a more efficient and less formal approach through the Township’s Special Event Approvals process,” which he says will allow North Huron to “provide support to community members to help make this a successful event.”
North Huron had appointed a full committee of council in early February, 2023 to discuss a Wingham Homecoming event in 2024, but days later, a Facebook group operated by a former committee member said that planning for homecoming would no longer take place. A source told CKNX that as many as seven committee members had resigned, or were in the process of resigning, following disagreements that North Huron Clerk Carson Lamb said had to do with disagreements regarding “legislative requirements.”
