Sinkhole closes road in Middlesex Centre

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) closed a roadway in Middlesex Centre Friday because of a sinkhole.

Fernhill Drive is closed between Wood Road and Poplar Hill Road, according to Middlesex County OPP.

Constable Jeff Hare said police received a call about a pothole on the road, but upon further inspection, officers realized it was actually a sinkhole.

Hare estimated the hole to be about six feet by three feet on its surface.

“The road is expected to be closed here… at least today into tomorrow. Thankfully it’s not a well-traveled road,” Hare said. “Obviously with the interesting winter we’ve had so far with the freeze-thaw-freeze-thaw, these can be results as well as potholes on some of our asphalt roads.”

If anyone comes across another pothole or sinkhole in the area, please contact Middlesex County at 519-434-7321 or the Middlesex County OPP’s non-emergency line at 1-888-310-1122.
