Three arrested after Woodstock weapons standoff

A 12-hour standoff in Woodstock over the weekend ended with three people being taken into police custody.

Woodstock police were called about a person with a weapon on William Street near Ingersoll Avenue around 9:10 p.m. on Saturday.

Local officers with the help of the Stratford police containment team and canine units surrounded a home on the residential street and remained on scene overnight. The public was asked to avoid the area.

By Sunday morning, officers were able to talk the men out of the house without incident. Three men were arrested.

Several residents who were unable to get to their homes during the standoff have since been allowed to return.

“It is not uncommon for these investigations to take time to investigate when factoring in all the involved risks to the public and to the officers on scene,” said Woodstock police Inspector Marcia Shelton. “We would like to thank the residents in the area, our local Salvation Army and to the Waterloo Regional Police and Stratford Police Services for their assistance.”

The investigation is continuing and charges are pending, police said.
