Crash near Tillsonburg sends several to hospital, including three kids

A young child was sent to hospital with life-threatening injuries after a single-vehicle crash outside of Tillsonburg mid-Tuesday morning.

According to Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Cst. Ed Sanchuk, members of the Norfolk County OPP, paramedic services, and fire department responded to the crash along 1st Concession Road STR in Middleton just after 9 a.m.

Police have since determined that the vehicle, containing two adults, two infants, and a four-year-old child, left the road, entered the ditch and struck a tree.

All five occupants were taken to hospital, however the four-year-old reportedly suffered serious, life-threatening injuries. Sanchuk did not provide details about the condition of the adults and pair of infants, but said they were transported to hospital “for precautionary measures.”

The OPP West Region Traffic Incident Management Enforcement (TIME) Team continues to investigate the incident and the area is expected to remain closed for approximately six more hours according to Sanchuk. The closure will extend from 1st concession Road STR to Byerlay Side Road and Highway 59.

“Please do me a favour, if you are travelling along the roadway, please do not go around the road closure signs,” said Sanchuk in a video posted to the OPP West Region’s Twitter account. “We’ve had several motorists attempt to come around and one motorist has also received a ticket for coming around those signs. If you see the [closed] road signs, please make the alternate detoured routes in order to get around safely.”

Additional details will be provided as they become available.
