One charged after fatal hit-and-run in Norfolk County

An arrest has been made after a hit-and-run in Townsend that left one person dead.

Norfolk County OPP said on Tuesday at 4:47 a.m., provincial officers, Six Nations Police Service, fire and emergency medical services were called to an address on Indian Line for a vehicle collision involving a pedestrian.

One person was reportedly transported to hospital, where they were pronounced dead. The victim’s identity has not been released at this time.

Since Tuesday, police have been searching for a white Volkswagen Atlas SUV they believe was involved in the collision.

Members of the Norfolk County OPP, their crime unit, and Haldimand Norfolk Community Street Crime Unit have since executed a search warrant at a residence on David Street in Halimand County, which police say led to the arrest of one person. A vehicle was also allegedly seized.

Police said Friday that a 39-year-old of Halimand County has been charged with failing to stop at an accident resulting in death.

“The OPP would like to take the opportunity to thank all our media outlets and members of the community who came forward and provided information surrounding this investigation.” said Inspector Jodi Kay, the detachment commander for Norfolk County OPP.

The accused is currently being held in custody and scheduled to appear in court Friday afternoon.
