What’s open, closed on New Year’s Day in London

After the new year kicks off on Sunday morning, many businesses around London will be closed to observe the statutory holiday.

All federal, provincial, and municipal government buildings will be closed on Sunday, along with banks, London Public Library branches, and post offices.

Shopping facilities will shut down on the January 1, including White Oaks Mall, CF Masonville Place, Cherry Hill Mall, Westmount Shopping Centre and the like. Most grocery stores will be closed, too. As for pharmacies, Shoppers Drug Marts will be closed Sunday, while many Rexall locations will be open for reduced hours. Downtown Londoners should know the storefront at Dundas Street and First Street will have its doors locked for the day.

If you’re planning on making a New Year’s Day toast, you’ll want to stock up early with LCBOs, Beer Stores, and the Labatt Retail Store shutting down on Sunday.

If you’re looking for something to do on Sunday, rest assured that there will still be some action around the city.

Some coffee shops, restaurants, convenience stores, and movie theatres will be open on the first.

London’s outdoor skating rink at Victoria Park will stick to its regular daily schedule – open 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., weather permitting. Storybook Gardens Skate Trail will be open with limited hours. The ice rink at Covent Garden Market remains closed and will return in early January, according to the market’s website.

Eldon House will host its annual free New Year’s Levee from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

London Transit will be running on a holiday schedule. The timetable for individual bus lines can be found on their website.

For most businesses around London, regular hours will resume on Monday, January 2. City hall remains closed until the following day at 8:30 a.m. Students and education workers return to school on Monday, January 9.
