Rainfall warning for London and surrounding area

If you meant to spend the last day of 2022 outdoors, you may want to make alternative plans.

Environment Canada is calling for rain from Friday night until Saturday evening, with 20 to 35 mm of rainfall expected in the London area. Precipitation will likely be heavy at times, according to the weather agency.

Municipalities throughout London-Middlesex and Elgin County are expected to be hit.

The rain might taper off on Saturday evening – a positive outlook for those with grand plans to ring in the new year at midnight.

The frozen ground has a reduced ability to absorb moisture, so heavy rain could lead to flash floods and water pooling on roads.

“Keep children and pets away from creeks and river banks,” Environment Canada advised.

Upper Thames River Conservation Authority issued a watershed conditions statement warning that water levels would increase significantly with melting snow and added precipitation, however, serious flooding was not expected at the time of publication. Southeast of London, Catfish Creek Conservation Authority put lower-lying communities in their area under a full-blown flood watch.
