London’s police chief is applauding the diligence of his officers who not only arrested a wanted man, but took a loaded sawed-off shotgun off the streets at the same time.
Officers with the police service’s street crime unit were in an unmarked police cruiser on Clarence Street around 9:40 a.m. on Wednesday when they spotted a man known to be wanted on outstanding warrants. The officers called for backup after watching the man go inside of a nearby home.
Just over an hour later, the man walked out of the home and was told he was under arrest. At this point, police said the man dropped a duffel bag he was carrying and took off running.
Officers caught up with him and took him into custody.
A loaded pump-action shotgun was allegedly found inside the duffel.
A second man was also arrested, police said.
Two men, aged 27 and 28, have been charged with unauthorized possession of a prohibited firearm, two counts of careless storage of a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon, and possession of a prohibited firearm with ammunition.
The 27-year-old faces two additional counts of possession of firearm or ammunition contrary to prohibition order, while the 28-year-old is also charged with failure to comply with an undertaking.
“Another deadly weapon removed from the street and two suspects arrested thanks to the diligence of street crime detectives,” Chief Steve Williams posted to social media. “Note one suspect already at large on an undertaking and the other prohibited from possessing firearms. More great work by our officers.”
