London cop charged with assaulting, threatening woman

Half a dozen charges have been laid against a London police officer accused of assaulting and threatening his romantic partner.

Police began investigating after a woman went to police headquarters to report that during an argument Monday, the man she was in a relationship with turned violent. The woman told police the man, who is a member of the police service, threatened her before physically attacking her. Property inside of the home was also damaged during the incident, police said.

Injuries were minor.

The woman also alleged that this wasn’t the first time the man had assaulted her. She reported incidents dating back to 2018.

Following an investigation, the 44-year-old officer was arrested. He has been charged with four counts of assault and one count each of uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm, unlawful possession of an unrestricted firearm, and mischief under $5,000. The 13 year veteran officer has since been released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court on January 18.

Police are not releasing the officer’s name in order to protect the identity of the woman.

The officer, who was off-duty at the time of the alleged incidents, has been suspended with pay, in accordance with the Ontario Police Services Act.

“As this matter is before the courts, the London Police Service will not comment further,” police said.
