Investigators would like to identify a man seen coming onto various properties in London and looking through unlocked mailboxes.
London police members of the Financial Crime Section launched the probe after receiving several similar reports where an unknown man was seen looking inside mailboxes attached to homes in the city. Police say during the instances where the man was confronted by homeowners, he told them he was having mail delivered to their house.
In addition to the strange encounters, some victims also reported receiving new credit cards and bank accounts opened in their names without their knowledge or consent.
“Members of the LPS Financial Crime Section would like to take this opportunity to remind members of the public to ensure that their mail is secure, possibly through the installation of a lockable mailbox,” a statement from police read. “If you observe someone suspicious using your mailbox, or receive suspicious mail, call police immediately as this could put you at risk of financial crimes in the future.”
Police have since obtained several photos of the man accused of going through mailboxes and are hoping the public may be able to identify him.
Anyone who has encountered a similar incident, or who is able to identify the man is asked to call the London Police Service at 519-661-5670. Tips can also be sent online anonymously to London Middlesex Crime Stoppers.
