The Upper Grand District School board is making contingency plans in case members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees strike Monday.
CUPE represents maintenance staff at all Upper Grand schools and custodians in many of their schools.
Schools with CUPE custodial staff will continue with in-person learning on Monday, November 21, Tuesday, November 22, and Wednesday, November 23. Those classrooms would switch to remote learning on Thursday November 24. Friday November 25 is a PA day, so there is no school for students. Drayton Heights and Minto Clifford Public Schools are among those schools with custodians represented by CUPE. Meantime, students at schools without CUPE custodians will remain in class next week.
All community use of school permits will be paused in the event of a strike, along with Adult ESL classes. Child Care Centres will remain open, but before or after school programs will only be operating on days a school is open for in-person learning.
The board hopes to keep schools open to in person learning as much as possible, but admits that will be challenging without CUPE employees. The board will continue to monitor the situation and warns there may be last minute changes.
