Don’t veer for deer.
Middlesex OPP are advising drivers to be extra vigilant on the roads after responding to eight separate collisions involving deer since Monday.
The latest car versus deer crashes happened on Wednesday. Police were called to one collision on Nairn Road in Middlesex Centre just before 7 a.m. That was followed by two more collisions with the animals in Southwest Middlesex and Adelaide Metcalfe, police said.
None of the eight crashes involving deer since the start of the week have resulted in serious injury. But they have prompted police to issue a reminder to drivers, particularly those on the roads in the early morning and evening hours.
“Motorists should look for glowing eyes along the shoulders of the road, slow down, remove distractions, buckle up, and never ‘veer for deer,’” police said in a statement.
Police further advise drivers who do strike a deer to pull to the shoulder of the road, turn on hazard lights, and ensure no one inside the vehicle has been hurt. If there are injuries, 911 should be called, otherwise, drivers could contact OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
