Nature’s Best, Zavat Chala cheeses recalled over Listeria concerns

A possible Listeria contamination has prompted a recall of two brands of cheddar and mozzarella cheese.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) announced the recall of Nature’s Best and Zavat Chala cheeses on Thursday. The recall covers Nature’s Best shredded cheddar cheese, shredded cheddar and mozzarella cheese, and sliced cheddar cheese, and Zavat Chalav shredded mozzarella cheese, shredded cheddar and mozzarella cheese, and sliced cheddar cheese thins.

The affected cheeses range in size from 150g to 800g packages and have best-before dates of January 20 and January 21, 2023. The products were sold in Ontario and Quebec, and may have also been distributed nationally.

Anyone with the shredded and sliced cheese in their refrigerator is advised not to eat it and should either toss it into the garbage or return it to the store where it was purchased.

Food contaminated with Listeria may not look or smell spoiled, but can still make you sick, according to the CFIA. Symptoms of Listeria infection include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache, and neck stiffness. Pregnant women, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk.

There have been no reported illnesses linked to the recalled cheese.
