Information session planned on condition of Southampton’s Fairy Lake

The future of Fairy Lake in Southampton will be discussed at an upcoming information session hosted by researchers from the University of Waterloo.

“An Afternoon at Fairy Lake” will see the research team of Dr. Rebecca Rooney and Dr. Heidi Swanson share initial project findings and recommendations, following a year-long study into the current condition of the lake.

The researchers spoke to Saugeen Shores council back in July, saying they identified the presence of bacteria, possible road salt, and most likely phosphorus and nitrogen from surrounding agricultural and residential land, also noting a “higher-than-normal pH level.”

Following that meeting, Saugeen Shores Mayor Luke Charbonneau said the study is part of a mission to protect the natural resources and assets in Saugeen Shores in a sustainable manner, and that he looked forward to receiving the recommendations and considering them as part of council’s future capital plans.

The information session will be held on Tuesday, October 4th at the Fairy Lake Rotary Pavilion from 2:00-3:00 p.m.
