House fire near downtown deemed suspicious

For the second time in a week, investigators are probing a fire on Sydenham Street west of Richmond Street.

Fire crews were called to the blaze at a home that’s been converted into apartments at 153 Sydenham Street around 11:40 p.m. on Thursday.

Firefighters used an aerial ladder to help extinguish the fire and ventilated smoke from the multi-unit residence.

No one was hurt and a damage estimate has yet to be released.

While the cause of the fire remains under investigation London police and fire officials believe it may have been intentionally set.

“The fire was deemed to be suspicious in nature and the investigation was assigned to members of the London Police Service Street Crime Unit, with the assistance of the London Fire Department,” police said in a statement Friday morning.

A fire on the same street at 4 a.m. last Friday caused $100,000 damage. That fire began in a shed and spread to a wooden exterior staircase at a home on the property. That fire was not considered suspicious, police said.
