The City of London is doing its part to keep the Forest City green and lush for National Tree Day next week.
City officials are giving away 2,000 to residents next Wednesday, September 21. Londoners will be able to pick from 12 different native species of trees to plant in their yards. There will be a limit of two trees per vehicle, on a first-come, first-serve basis.
The types of trees include:
* Native Red Maple • Sugar Maple
* Hackberry • Paper Birch
* Tulip Tree • Hazelnut
* American Sycamore • Basswood
* White Spruce • White Pine
* Serviceberry • Eastern Redbud
The city plants around 5,000 trees every year in the spring and fall. Trees help with the effects of climate change, provide shade and lower temperatures, reduce energy costs at homes and make streets more walkable. Trees also help absorb heavy rainfall and reduce stormwater flows.
The trees for National Tree Day will be available for pickup on 555 Bathurst Street between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. while supplies last. Those who require assistance to obtain or plant their tree can call city officials at 519-661-5783.
