The Middlesex London Health Unit has recorded three more COVID-19 related deaths since last Thursday.
Two men, one in his 80s and the other in his 90s, and a woman in her 100s are the most recent individuals in the London region to succumb to the virus, the health unit confirmed on Monday. The man in his 90s was the only one of the three linked to a long-term care facility. The three latest deaths increase the local death toll to 423.
The health unit also recorded 228 lab-confirmed COVID-19 cases since it last updated its COVID-19 dashboard on Thursday. However, public health officials caution that single-day case numbers are an underestimate of community spread due to eligibility changes that limit who can receive a test. The area’s total case count stands at 41,344 since the pandemic began.
Resolved cases are up to 40,245 and the number of active cases locally rose by 20 since Thursday to 676 on Monday. That is the highest number of known active cases in the city and county since early May.
The London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) said on Monday it currently has 43 patients with the virus in its care. That is a decrease of one since Thursday. According to hospital officials, 20 of the current inpatients are being treated for the virus, while the other 23 are being treated for other ailments but have tested positive for COVID.
The intensive care unit has five or fewer infected patients. At Children’s Hospital, there are five or fewer inpatients with the virus currently admitted, including five or fewer listed in paediatric critical care.
The number of hospital workers who have tested positive went down by 30 on Monday. There are now 90 infected staffers at the LHSC.
There are three ongoing level two COVID-19 outbreaks at University Hospital – on the U7 CNS, U4 Medicine, and 4TU – Transplant units.
The health unit’s next scheduled COVID-19 update will be on Thursday.
Southwestern Public Health, the health unit that covers Elgin and Oxford counties, only updates its COVID-19 cases dashboard on Wednesdays, while the province issues its weekly updated numbers on Thursdays.
