Hospitalizations and the death toll from COVID-19 both saw an increase over the weekend in the London region.
The London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) confirmed on Monday it has 25 patients with the virus in its care. That is an increase of two since Thursday. At this time last week, there were 22 inpatients with COVID-19 at the LHSC. According to hospital officials, six of the current inpatients are being treated for the virus, while the other 19 are being treated for other ailments but have tested positive for COVID.
The intensive care unit has five or fewer infected patients. At Children’s Hospital there are five or fewer inpatients with the virus, including five or fewer who are listed in paediatric critical care.
The number of hospital workers who have tested positive went down by three on Monday. There are 133 infected staffers at the LHSC. Despite the decrease, the number of ill employees is still higher than at this time last week when 120 were confirmed to have contracted the virus.
The last remaining outbreak at the LHSC is now over. Hospital officials said on Monday the level two outbreak at University Hospital’s U10 SAMU and palliative care unit has been resolved.
The Middlesex London Health Unit reported 184 new COVID-19 cases since it last updated its COVID-19 dashboard on Thursday. However, public health officials caution that single-day case numbers are an underestimate of community spread due to eligibility changes that limit who can receive a test. The area’s total case count stands at 39,818 since the pandemic began.
One additional death from the virus has been confirmed since the health unit last reported. A woman in her 90s, who was associated with a long-term care home has succumbed to COVID-19, the health unit said. Her death increases the local death toll to 412
Resolved cases are up to 38,872 and the number of active cases locally rose by 42 since Thursday to 534 on Monday.
The health unit’s next scheduled COVID-19 update will be on Thursday.
Southwestern Public Health, the health unit that covers Elgin and Oxford counties, only updates its COVID-19 cases dashboard on Wednesdays, while the province issues its weekly updated numbers on Thursdays.
