Downtown Walkerton to be a ‘Streetfest’

The Municipality of Brockton is hosting a festival in downtown Walkerton this Friday, July 22nd from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. for residents and visitors.

The inaugural Walkerton Summer Streetfest will feature sidewalk sales from over a dozen businesses in the downtown core, some with offerings including but not limited to; a Doggie Tasting Table, homemade lemonade, and two separate musical acts – Rob Brunato and “Shooter John”.

For the Love of Ice, a brand new venture offering cold water immersion therapy, is hosting a fundraiser for the local hospice campaign, with Brockton Councillor James Lang braving a bath-tub of frigid ice water for the cause. That display gets underway at 3 p.m. on Victoria Street.

Durham Street will remain open to traffic for the day, but Colborne Street will be closed for a half block south of Durham, between the Walkerton Library and Godfather’s Pizza, for a host of family activities, including:

• An obstacle course and old-fashioned games such as ring toss

• The Nuclear Innovation Institute’s “Science in the Summer” hands-on exhibit for kids

• Artisan ice cream from The Dam Ice Cream Bar in Cargill

• Two special Story Times Under the Tent with the Walkerton Library, at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

• Petunia the Clown’s Magic Show

• Chuckles’ Balloons

There will also be information about local volunteer opportunities, the upcoming municipal election, the Market Garden campaign, and Victoria Jubilee Hall’s 125th anniversary and concert series.

The historic performing arts centre and former City Hall is offering free public tours that day, at 11 a.m., 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.

“This will be a fun summer celebration, and I encourage all residents and visitors to come check it out! Downtown Walkerton is a shopping destination and we have a wonderful assortment of boutiques and restaurants, new and old, to discover,” said Brockton Mayor Chris Peabody.
