BRT construction to close another downtown intersection

Drivers will have a new traffic hiccup to avoid when travelling through the downtown this week.

Beginning on Tuesday, the intersection of King Street and Waterloo Street will be closed to all vehicles. The closure is to allow for work to continue on phase 1 of the bus rapid transit East London Link.

Throughout the two months the intersection will be shut down city crews will be adding transportation and transit improvements above ground, while repairing and replacing aging underground infrastructure.

“To maintain access to businesses and properties, portions of King Street just east of Wellington Street and just west of Colborne Street will be converted to two-way traffic,” city officials said in a statement. “Pedestrian access is being maintained through the King and Waterloo Street intersection. Cyclists will be able to travel around the intersection, and are encouraged to use Dundas Street and Colborne Street, where protected bike lanes are available.”

The East London Link construction project will revitalize more than 6 km of road from the downtown to Fanshawe College, the city said. It will see the creation of dedicated public transit lanes and the repairing and replacing of aging sewers, watermains and other underground infrastructure.

Remaining phases of the project will be completed between 2023 and 2025
