COVID-19 hospitalizations down as London region records another death

There has been another COVID-19 related death in the London region.

The Middlesex London Health Unit reported on Monday that a woman in her 90s is the latest person locally to succumb to the virus. The elderly woman was not associated with a long-term care or retirement home. Her death is the first COVID-19 related death in the area since the end of June and increases the total death toll in the city and county to 408.

There were also 111 new cases recorded by the health unit since it last updated its COVID-19 dashboard on Thursday. However, public health officials caution that single-day case numbers are an underestimate of community spread due to eligibility changes that limit who can receive a test. The area’s total case count stands at 39,129 since the pandemic began.

Resolved cases are up to 38,369. The number of active cases locally went down by one since Thursday to 352 on Monday.

The London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) confirmed on Monday the number of inpatients infected with COVID-19 is currently under half of what it was last Thursday. There are now 15 patients with the virus admitted, a decrease of 16. At this time last week, there were 30 inpatients with COVID-19 at the LHSC. According to hospital officials, nine of the current inpatients are being treated for the virus, while the remaining six are being treated for other ailments but have tested positive for COVID.

The intensive care unit has five or fewer infected patients, while there are currently none admitted to Children’s Hospital.

The number of hospital workers who have tested positive went down by just one on Monday. There are 108 infected staffers at the LHSC. At this time last week there were 90 hospital employees who had contracted the virus.

There are just two level two COVID-19 outbreaks at University Hospital and none at Victoria Hospital. A third outbreak at University Hospital was declared over late last week.

The health unit will issue its next COVID-19 update on Thursday, as it now only updates its COVID dashboard twice a week.

Southwestern Public Health, the health unit that covers Elgin and Oxford counties, only updates its COVID-19 cases dashboard on Wednesdays, while the province issues its weekly updated numbers on Thursdays.
