London police are warning about the dangers of street racing after two vehicles were clocked doing more than doubled the posted speed limit on a south-end street.
The drivers of the two vehicles were allegedly racing on Wellington Road South near Roxburgh Road late one night near the end of last month. According to police, an officer clocked the vehicles travelling at a speed of 147 km/h in the posted 70 km/h zone.
“Speeding, and in particular, speeds which would be considered ‘racing’ or ‘stunt driving’, are not only dangerous to the individuals involved, but to everyone else in and around the roadways they are travelling on,” said Sergeant Ozzie Nethersole, head of London police traffic management unit.
The vehicles were stopped and a 32-year-old man and a 29-year-old man, both from London, were charged with stunt driving. Their vehicles were impounded for 14 days and their licences suspended for 30 days, in accordance with stiffer penalties for street racing introduced by the Ontario government last year.
