Man charged after stolen car damages cruisers near Strathroy

A man accused of stealing a car near Strathroy was the subject of a brief police chase early Thursday morning.

At 7:44 a.m., Middlesex Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a complaint that a vehicle was stolen from an address on Second Street in Adelaide Metcalfe Township. Several officers responded, and the vehicle was spotted a short time later on McCubbin Road.

Officers laid down a spike belt to keep the driver from speeding off. However, the suspect continued driving despite three deflated tires on the vehicle. To maintain public safety, police conducted a rolling stop on Elginfield Road, which damaged a pair of cruisers.

The man was taken into custody without incident. No one was hurt during the altercation.

OPP have since laid several charges against the accused, a 46-year-old man of no fixed address. He is charged with possession of property by crime over $5,000, flight from a peace officer, dangerous operation and driving while suspended.

The accused remains in police custody for a bail hearing.
