Homes evacuated after crash causes gas leak in southeast London

Several homes in southeast London had to be evacuated on Monday morning after a vehicle crashed into a house causing a gas leak.

The vehicle struck the home on the quiet residential street of Vermont Avenue north of Commissioners Road East shortly after 9 a.m. A natural gas line was damaged in the crash and began leaking.

Out of an abundance of caution, houses in the area were evacuated and students and staff at nearby schools were told to stay inside by emergency crews.

There is no word on injuries.

London firefighters, police, and Enbridge crews are on scene.

People are advised to avoid the area for the time being.
