The Town of Saugeen Shores has announced they’ve authorized the next steps to develop the Cedar Crescent Village.
Mayor Luke Charbonneau says this is a significant step in the ongoing revitalization of Port Elgin’s Main Beach.
“We’re finally going to see this project get underway, and hopefully have it constructed and get those amenities we have been looking to have on the beach for a long time for residents and visitors,” said Charbonneau.
According to a town release, the move comes six months after the Town’s Committee of the Whole recommended entering into a Site Works and Servicing Agreement with the project’s developer. Since then, the developer has executed the agreement and submitted plans and drawings that will finalize the project and support the waterfront development.
The next step is for the project developer to get a building permit within the next three months and has agreed to complete the project within two years after that.
While the project is a private venture operating on leased public land, the Town retains control of:
• The overall quality and character of the project
• The integration of the project within the Waterfront Master Plan
• The impact of the project on parking and traffic
• The project’s sustainability
Under the FAQ section of the project on the town’s website, it states that back in 2013, Saugeen Shores conducted extensive public consultations and sought out expert recommendations to create its Waterfront Master Plan, as well undertaking a Waterfront Design Study.
And the new Cedar Crescent Village is expected to support beach visitors with seating, shade, food and beverages.
The town also states that the development is an opportunity to reorganize the beach to designate land use, transportation, and parking to be more efficient and more accessible.
