Huron County’s Housing Manager says they’re received some good news from both the Federal and Provincial governments.
Christine Hoffman says the Canada – Ontario Social Housing agreement represents funding that can be a re-investment of Federal funding that’s been declining.
So, she says, it’s an opportunity for them as service managers and housing providers, to address challenges associated with projects reaching the end of their operating agreement.
“We’ve been using this funding for our providers to be able to do capital upgrades, which they may not have been able to do,” said Hoffman.
Hoffman says the Canada – Ontario Housing Benefit is a program under the National Housing Strategy which started in April of 2020 and gives participants a portable housing benefit, which is paid directly to the household to make their rent more affordable.
“The application process is done by us and the Federal government actually runs the program after that. The advantage of this particular program that we like is that if somebody moves, the benefit follows with them. So, if they move outside of the county, because it is a Federal program, the subsidy goes with them wherever they go.”
Hoffman says that helps people in Huron County but it doesn’t limit them to staying in the unit they currently call home or even to staying in Huron County.
