UPDATE: Severe thunderstorms in forecast for Wednesday

Portions of southwestern Ontario could be seeing some wild weather Wednesday afternoon.

Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Windsor-Essex and Chatham-Kent, and a severe thunderstorm watch for London, Middlesex County, and Oxford County.

Radar shortly after 12 p.m. showed a cluster of strong thunderstorms just southwest of Detroit, and moving northeast.

Heavy downpours, small hail, and wind gusts of up to 90 kilometres per hour are possible, according to the weather agency.

“Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles,” read the statement from Environment Canada. “Locally heavy rain is also possible. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year.”

A severe thunderstorm watch means conditions are favourable for the development of severe weather. A severe thunderstorm warning means that a thunderstorm is occurring or imminent, and people should find a safe shelter until the weather clears.
