Provincial police were left amazed that the driver walked away after a vehicle slammed into a home in Norfolk County.
The car was on Highway 24 between Vittoria Road and United Church Road when the driver lost control, hit a guide wire and rolled the vehicle through the front of an unoccupied house just before 6 a.m. on Tuesday. The vehicle, which left two wheels and much of its front end scattered about, came to rest near a tree on the front lawn of the home.
A passer-by spotted the extensive damage and called police.
The driver of the vehicle had left the scene and also contacted police upon returning home, Norfolk OPP said.
That person was taken to hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
In a social media post, police credited the use of a seatbelt for sparing the driver from more serious harm.
“Officers absolutely amazed that a driver walked away with non-life threatening injuries after crashing into a home… If you don’t think seatbelts will save a life, think again,” OPP wrote on Twitter.
Police said the investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing, but speed is considered to be a contributing factor.
