Provincial police in Norfolk County are expecting a large number of visitors to gather in Port Dover for the first and only Friday the 13th this year.
The Ontario Provincial Police say they are working with local partners as revelers flock to the town for the traditional motorcycle rally. Those in attendance should expect to see a “highly visible” police presence.
OPP officials added there will likely be traffic delays in some areas and drivers will need to take their time and be patient.
“As motorcycle enthusiasts descend on Port Dover, there will be an increase in motorcycle traffic and the OPP is asking all drivers to take those two extra seconds before making a lane change or proceeding through an intersection. Those two seconds can make the difference between life and death,” said Norfolk County OPP Inspector Shawn Johnson.
Drivers are also being told to be aware of no parking signage and tow away zones.
Additionally, those who are considering bringing a drone to the event are better off leaving them at home. Pursuant to the Aeronautics Act, Norfolk County OPP say the downtown core airspace will be closed and restricted on May 13 during police operations. This includes four nautical miles from the centre of town, to 2,000 feet above surface. Police, medevac and rescue aircraft are exempt.
This is the first Friday the 13th celebration post-COVID-19 pandemic restrictions. Environment Canada forecasts sunny skies and a high of 22 C on Friday.
