Man charged in hammer and knife attack at hospital

A London man faces charges after police allege he attacked a hospital employee with a hammer and a knife.

Police were called to the London Health Sciences Centre’s Victoria campus at 800 Commissioners Road around 1:50 p.m. Thursday. According to police, a man walked into the hospital, carrying a hammer and a knife. A bystander notified security and followed the man as he went past the check-in counter and approached a hospital employee.

The man ” struck the employee with a hammer, and proceeded to assault the victim with a knife, causing serious, but non-life threatening injuries,” police said.

The attacker took off, but was arrested by hospital security and held until police arrived.

Police say the suspect and the victim did not know each other.

Matthew James Brooks, 35, of London is charged with aggravated assault and two counts of failing to comply with an undertaking.
