Woman charged in crash that killed Girl Guide to return to court next month

The London woman charged in a collision that killed an 8-year-old girl and injured several members of a Girl Guides troop last fall has had her case put over for six weeks.

Petronella McNorgan, 76, is charged with one count of criminal negligence causing death and seven counts of criminal negligence causing bodily harm in connection with the November 30 crash along Riverside Drive. Her lawyer Phillip Millar appeared in London court on her behalf Wednesday morning.

“It is a very serious matter that is going to require a lot of disclosure as there is a lot of technical elements and engineering reports. We haven’t got all of the disclosure yet,” Millar said in asking for the six week adjournment.

The Crown advised the court it is also working through an extensive first set of disclosure, before agreeing a six week pause was appropriate.

The case was put over until May 25.

Charges against McNorgan were announced at the end of January.

Alexandra Stemp suffered fatal injuries after she and nine other pedestrians were hit by a vehicle as they walked along Riverside Drive near Wonderland Road following a Girl Guide meeting the night of November 30. London police have said the same vehicle collided with another vehicle stopped at a red light, a light pole, and a tree moments before striking the pedestrians. Stemp was rushed to hospital where she later died from her injuries. The nine other people who were hit ranged in age from 6 to 40.

McNorgan’s vehicle had been in for brake service the same day as the crash, Millar previously told London News Today. London police have stated that there is nothing to indicate the crash was an intentional act.
