St. Thomas Mayor Joe Preston to seek re-election

Joe Preston is eyeing a second term as the mayor of St. Thomas.

Preston announced his intention to run for re-election on Wednesday.

“I am sharing this news early to be able to continue to lead our council’s efforts with friendship and vision to move our beautiful city forward. We have so much more to accomplish before the October election,” Preston said in a statement. “While St. Thomas grows steadily, we work as a strong team proudly offering a continued plan for “Smart Growth”, housing, jobs, services, as well as community inclusive amenities.”

Preston was first elected as St. Thomas’ mayor in 2018 after defeating incumbent Heather Jackson by just over 500 votes. Prior to that he served as Member of Parliament for Elgin-Middlesex-London from 2004 to 2015. He is also a long-time local business owner having owned the Wendy’s franchise on Talbot Street since 1990.

“Job creation, community involvement and mentoring are my lifelong passion,” said Preston. “Giving back is the price you pay for living in the community you call home.”

The municipal election is slated for this October.
