A 23-year-old woman broke both of her arms while trying to avoid arrest by London police last month, the province’s police watchdog has determined.
The Special Investigations Unit began investigating the incident on February 5.
Police were called about a domestic disturbance at an apartment on Lyle Street that evening. While officers were outside the door to the unit, the woman ran to the balcony and jumped to the ground below, according to the SIU.
Investigators said the woman jumped in an effort to avoid being arrested for breaking the terms of a release order.
She was arrested nearby a short time later and was taken to hospital for treatment of fractures to both arms.
Preliminary inquiries by the SIU, which included a review of video of the woman jumping, found police were not in her immediate vicinity when she made her way to the balcony.
“There was patently nothing to investigate as far as the potential criminal liability of any police officer involved in the matter,” SIU Director Joseph Martino concluded. “Accordingly, the file has been closed.”
The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates incidents involving police that have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault or the discharging of a firearm.
