MPP announces more long-term care beds for riding

Perth-Wellington MPP Randy Pettapiece announced funding to build and improve long-term care beds at a number of homes in his riding yesterday.

Pettapiece says 166 new beds will be coming, along with 282 upgraded beds to 4 local long-term care homes.

“38 new and 90 upgraded beds at Hillside Manor in Perth East, 36 new and 60 upgraded beds at Wildwood Care Centre in St. Marys, 48 new and 80 upgraded beds at Caressant Care in Arthur and 44 new and 52 upgraded beds at Caressant Care in Listowel.”

Pettapiece adds these new beds are in addition to a number of projects in the area that are already underway.

“Already there’s 100 new and 60 upgraded beds at peopleCare in Stratford, 66 new and 62 upgraded beds at Kingsway Nursing Home ltd., 29 new and 67 upgraded beds at Royal Terrace, 9 new and 87 upgraded beds at Saugeen Valley Nursing Home, 3 new beds at Knollcrest and 128 upgraded beds at Ritz Lutheran Villa.”

In the official release, Pettapiece adds these beds are part of the provincial government’s promised investment of 6.4 billion dollars for long term care beds, with a goal of 30,000 new beds and over 28,000 upgraded beds province wide. He notes that with more beds, more staff is needed in the years to come.

“That’s why we’re investing almost 5 billion dollars over the next 4 years to help hire more than 27,000 healthcare workers for long-term care. This will help us provide an average of 4 hours of daily care per resident. I have always spoken up for our local long-term care homes, and it is very encouraging that the government is delivering the beds we need. More seniors will get the care they need. This will remain a major priority for us.”

“I want to thank and congratulate everyone involved in these bed applications,” Pettapiece adds. “Most importantly, I want to again recognize all the long-term care staff who do outstanding work in difficult jobs, even during the most difficult days of the pandemic. We cannot thank them enough.”
