Jerry Dias under investigation for alleged breach of Unifor constitution

Just one day after Unifor President Jerry Dias announced his early retirement, the union disclosed it has been investigating him since January.

A statement from Unifor late Monday afternoon said an independent external investigation was opened on January 26 after secretary-treasurer Lana Payne was sent a written complaint that Dias engaged in an alleged breach of the Unifor constitution.

Details about the complaint have not been revealed however, Unifor said Dias was notified about the investigation on January 29.

On February 6, the now former president went on medical leave. Just over a month later on March 11, he notified the National Executive Board of his retirement citing unspecified health issues. Unifor announced Dias’ retirement on Sunday.

Following the news of the investigation, Unifor Local 444 expressed its support of the probe into the allegations.

“Our members deserve nothing less than transparency and truth through out this process,” a message from Local 444 read. “As leadership we should always be held to a higher standard in upholding and abiding by the terms or our constitution.”

WindsorNewsToday.ca has reached out to Local 444 President Dave Cassidy for additional comment.
