Man angry over mask mandate shoplifts after being turfed from Aylmer store

A man allegedly stole several items from a downtown Aylmer store after being asked to leave for not wearing a face covering.

Aylmer police were called to the store on Talbot Street East just after 2 p.m. on Saturday. An investigation determined an employee spotted a maskless man inside and asked him to put on a face covering. It was at this point the man began using “scripted material” that referenced mask mandates, freedom, and COVID-19 restrictions, police said.

The man eventually agreed to leave, but allegedly stole several items on his way out the door.

The stolen items are valued at only about $30.

Police are now looking for a man described as being in his 30s, 6 feet tall, with an average build, black hair and a long black beard. He was last seen leaving the area in a black pickup truck, possibly a Ford F250, with oversized tires and a large Canadian flag attached to the back.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call police at 519-773-3146 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
