Messy snow, rain mix to hit London-area Friday

The London region is in line to get a messy mix of snow, wet snow, and rain Friday.

Environment Canada has issued a winter weather travel advisory for London, eastern Middlesex County and Oxford County.

The snow will begin to fall in the morning with between 5 to 10 centimetres possible, the national weather agency said.

Snow will change over to a wet snow-rain mix in the afternoon before easing to scattered flurries and drizzle in the evening.

Winds will also be a bit of an issue, gusting to 50 km/h from the south throughout the day.

“Motorists should expect hazardous winter driving conditions and adjust travel plans accordingly. Visibility will be suddenly reduced to near zero at times in heavy snow and blowing snow,” Environment Canada said. “If visibility is reduced while driving, turn on your lights and maintain a safe following distance.”

Roughly 2 more centimetres of snow is expected to fall on Saturday with the temperature falling to -9 C by the afternoon, according to Environment Canada. The sun returns to the area on Sunday, but the temperatures will remain well below seasonal with a high of -10 C. The average daytime high for this time of year is -2 C.
