Driver trying to avoid arrest causes $20K damage to police cruisers

Charges have been laid after a London man, accused of driving an SUV with stolen licence plates, crashed into several police cruisers, causing thousands of dollars worth of damage.

London police began investigating on Tuesday after a woman reported the licence plates had been stolen off of her vehicle parked on Atkinson Boulevard. An officer spotted an SUV with the stolen plates on Trafalgar Street near Atkinson and attempted to pull it over on Thursday morning. The driver of the SUV did not stop and instead sped away from the officer, police said.

Police used tire deflation devices in another attempt to stop the vehicle, but despite the flat tires, it continued on.

Roughly 20 minutes later, the SUV collided with multiple police cruisers before finally coming to a stop in the area of Ridout Street and Commissioners Road. The driver was arrested.

A 32-year-old London man is charged with dangerous operation of a vehicle, failure to stop for police, operation of a vehicle while prohibited, possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, and two counts of failure to comply with a release order.

No one was injured, but damage to the police cruisers is estimated at $20,000, police said.
