London’s transit system is getting an $11,147,133 boost from Ontario’s gas tax program.
Elgin-Middlesex-London MPP Jeff Yurek announced the funds going to the City of London for transit improvements on Wednesday.
“Supporting public transit systems is more important than ever as communities struggle to maintain service levels during COVID-19,” said Yurek. “This funding will help to ensure that these critical services continue to safely and efficiently get people where they need to be and drive local economic recovery.”
The gas tax program sees two cents from every litre of fuel sold at the pumps during the previous year sent to municipalities with transit systems. The funds can be used to extend service hours, buy transit vehicles, add routes, improve accessibility or upgrade infrastructure.
London received roughly the same amount from the gas tax program last year.
Yurek also announced $422,877 for St. Thomas.
