A building that once housed a popular downtown coffee shop is about to be transformed into a banking centre.
Libro Credit Union announced on Monday it will move its downtown branch into the old Williams Coffee pub location at 578 Richmond Street, in front of Victoria Park.
Credit union officials believe the move from its current location on Central Avenue will make it more visible downtown.
“It puts us right in the heart of downtown and will make Libro’s presence in the core unmissable,” Nichole Heron, the credit union’s community manager for downtown, said in a statement. “Libro Credit Union believes in our cities’ downtown areas and will continue to invest, work and play there. It aligns well with our core theme of promoting financial resilience: on a macro level, cities like London need a strong and resilient downtown, and Libro is determined to make a strong contribution to it.”
The move to the new location on Richmond Street is expected to happen in mid-2022, the credit union said.
The downtown branch had been located at 167 Centre Ave. since the early 1990s. But since administration staff were moved to 217 York Street, much of the 7,000 square foot space on Central has sat empty. The building is now up for sale.
Libro has more than 36 locations across southwestern Ontario.
