A media release from Bruce County says there were no injuries in yesterday’s fire at a seniors’ building in Walkerton.
The blaze broke out at about 11:40 PM on Wednesday, January 12, 2022, at 401 Cayley Street, Walkerton.
This is a residential seniors’ apartment operated by Bruce County Housing Corporation.
On arrival, local firefighters identified a fire on the second floor of the building. Firefighters rescued several tenants trapped by smoke and contained the fire to a common area of the second floor.
A full evacuation took place of all 44 units in the building.
Walkerton, Mildmay, and Elmwood fire departments responded to this fire. Crews were on scene until approximately 4:00 AM.
The building remains in the possession of local fire departments. The Ontario Fire Marshall’s Office will be attending to complete an investigation.
Tenants that do not have alternative accommodation have been sheltered at a local hotel. Residents are asked to avoid attending the location at this time. Tenants, family members, and supports can contact 1-800-265-3022 to inquire about further information.
Bruce County wishes to thank the OPP, the Municipality of Brockton, the volunteer fire departments for their rescue efforts, and Sacred Heart Parish for providing a temporary relief from the cold for those on the scene.
Staff from Bruce County’s Facilities and Housing Services team will work on building remediation and serving tenants immediate needs.
