Spitfires, Knights swap goalie, draft picks

The Windsor Spitfires have added depth to their goaltending.

The OHL club announced Wednesday afternoon that it had completed a trade with the London Knights for goalie Mathias (Matt) Onuska.

In exchange, the Knights will receive Windsor’s 2022 sixth-round OHL draft pick, received via the Kingston Frontenacs; along with the Spits’ conditional 2024 fourth-round pick.

Onuska will join Xavier Medina and Kyle Downey between the pipes for Windsor.

“We have strengthened the goaltending position,” said Spitfires General Manager Bill Bowler. “We see potential with Matt and he is a welcome addition to our club.”

The 18-year-old Waterloo native was drafted by Kingston in the seventh round of the 2018 OHL draft. This season in London, Onuska had a 0-2 record with three games played, a 3.03 goals-against average, and a 91 per cent save percentage.

With the OHL carrying on with its schedule despite the COVID-19 pandemic suspending other junior play, Windsor visits Guelph Wednesday night. The Knights host Flint on Friday night.
